Homework this week- Math as usual, Topic test 5 is Friday, NO SPELLING, Writing a paragraph.
A little about the writing homework...

Writing is a very important skill for a third grader and it is something we focus on throughout the school week.  When we take state tests, writing has it's own section and it is important for your child to be able to produce a solid piece.  The more practice, the better their writing will be.  Once a month we will be sending home writing homework that helps practice this skill. Today a prompt was sent home and will need to be returned by Monday, November 18th. The packet that is sent home will include a graphic and checklist of what we are looking for in their piece as well as draft paper and final copy paper.  I am focusing on the final copy when I grade the piece, but I wanted them to have the tools to help them produce a successful paragraph.
In addition to writing at home, we will be writing a book review and creating a class book. Each child checked out a picture book from the library and they are writing up a review on it. After they are finished with the write up, they will be creating a final copy that will be sent to a publishing company. From there we will receive a class book. Families will be able to purchase a copy of this book if they would like to.  Information will be coming home next week about this.

Language Arts
This week's story focused on the essential question, How do people figure things out? This week we read many poems that had to do with this essential question.  We focused on the following...
-Strategy: Alliteration and rhyme
-Skill:Author's Point of View compared to our point of view
-Building vocabulary
-Spelling-Words with digraphs

This next week is our sixth week in this unit.  Every six weeks we have a review week, which means that we will not have spelling those weeks or regular stories.

Math- This coming week we will be wrapping up Topic 5. I plan on giving the test over the topic on Friday next week. Please have your children practice math facts throughout the week.  Try having them focus on one number at a time.
