Language Arts- This week we read "The Dream Catcher", "Yoon and the Jade Bracelet", which are realistic fiction stories, and "Family Traditions". Each story teaches about culture and tradition. These stories focused on the essential question, What can traditions teach you about cultures? We worked on locating text evidence, learned new vocabulary, talked about story sequencing and practiced visualizing a story. We also worked on types of sentences and short vowel sounds. In writing we worked on writing summaries for the sequence of our story and wrote in our weekly journals. At this point in the year we will be practicing the weekly tests together to get used to the format and learn how to take them online.
Math- This week we finished up Topic 1 and we worked on learning our math facts. We talked about patterns that we found when multiplying by 0, 1, 2, 5, and 9. We continued to talk about the commutative property and introduced the identity property as well as the zero property. This is a short topic and we will be testing over it this coming week. Ways to prepare for the test will be practicing their math flashcards that were sent home. Please have them practice these nightly. Their first test grade came home today. In third grade we take the math tests online and only their scores are sent home, if you would like to see the test, you can find them in their Powerschool account. If your child scored below a 70% I will send home a paper version of the test with highlighted problems for them to complete that coincide with problems they missed on the actual test. Please have your child complete these for extra points and sign and have them return it the following school day. For this first test I allowed C- scores to be corrected as well. One thing you can discuss with your children is making sure that they take their time on the test. I had a handful of kids that didn't scroll down and missed answering questions. I did have them complete these this time, but they need to make sure that they are checking over before submitting their test. Also, some questions ask for more then one answer and many just checked 1 answer, getting partial credit. Reading directions and slowing down is very important.
Social Studies- This week we are continued learning about types of maps. Next week we will be learning about some of Avon Lake's history.
Please remember to check their Friday Folders this weekend and have them return them to school Monday.
