Language Arts- This week's stories focused on the essential question, How can problem solving lead to new ideas?  We cited relevant evidence from text, described text structure, cause and effect and we summarized the text.  Kids had to demonstrate an understanding of metaphors and worked on identifying predicates and subjects in a sentence.  Our two main stories were biographies.  I personally loved the stories this week.  I was fascinated learning about a couple different inventors.  The first story was called, "Mary Anderson's Great Invention".  We learned that she solved the problem of drivers not being able to see when there was bad weather, but invented the windshield wipers.  The next story was called, "All Aboard".  We learned here that Elijah McCoy had many inventions including an oil cup that was used on steam engines to help the train continue to run.  We also learned that many people tried to duplicate this, but they were never good enough so people would ask for "The Real Mccoy". This is where this saying originate.

Math- This week in math we worked on multiplication facts 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 and the distributive property.  This coming week we will learn about the associate property of multiplication and prepare for Topic 3 test on Thursday.

Writing- We will be working on writing a friendly letter to a fictional character of their choice.

Reminder, Monday is Picture Day

Also, please be sure to sign-up for conferences on October 12th or 13th. Mrs. Isaly-Johns sent out an email with the link last week.
