Language Arts- 

This week's story focused on the essential question- How do animals adapt to challenges in their habitat? 
We focused on the following...

-Strategy: rereading for clarification

-Skill: Compare and Contrast

-Vocabulary acquisition

-Spelling- Variant Vowels

-Phonics- Variant Vowels and Greek and Latin roots

Our stories this week are Expository Texts.  We will be citing relevant evidence from the text to help answer questions about the stories.  We will also be comparing and contrasting two different animals within the text to help learn how they are the same and how they are different.  We will learn a lot of interesting facts about certain animals and how they adapt to their environment.  

We will also be wrapping up working on writing an opinion piece about our favorite story that we have read in our anthology this year so far. 

Math- We just wrapped up Topic 9 in math on Friday.  Topic 10 will run a little differently.  Topic 10 focuses on Multiplying by multiples of 10.  We incorporated a lot of this when we had the topic on multiplication earlier this year so this is much like a review.  This topic is only 4 sections long, but we will be working on it only 2 days.  There will not be a test over this topic as a result.  On Thursday we will be introducing Topic 11, Use Operations with Whole Numbers to Solve Problems.  This will focus on 2-step word problems using a variety of operations.  We will be working on this Through the first week of March and aim to test over it on March 6th.
