Boy, was it a hot week! Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Coutris for bringing the kids popsicles on Thursday.

Language Arts- This week began our first week into our regular language arts program.  We began our week reading a story called, "Bruno's New Home", which is a Fantasy.  This story focused on the essential question, "what can stories teach you?  In this story Bear was taught the important lesson that good friends can come in small packages, basically don't judge a book by it's cover.  We worked on locating text evidence, learned new vocabulary, talked about character traits and learned about visualizing a story.  After that we close read the story, "Wolf"  and "Jennie and the Wolf"and continued to work with the same essential question and similar skills including the same vocabulary.  We also wrote a journal prompt this week visualizing Bruno's home using colorful words.  Next week we will wrap-up these skills and then begin Unit 1, week 2 of the wonders program.
We will also be beginning our first writing project, which will result in writing a friendly letter.  I asked kids to start to think about who they would like to write a friendly letter to and to try to bring in an address for that person within the next couple weeks.

Math- This week we took our test over topic 1.  It is my policy that if your child receives a d or an f on a math test they are able to correct it for extra points and return it to school the next week.  The test is being sent home today in their homework folders.  Today we began Topic 2.  This topic is going to focus more on learning multiplication facts, so we will be stepping up homework a bit this week by adding practicing math facts each night.

Social Studies- We are continuing to learn about government and learning what the social and political responsibilities of a citizen are. This week we read Duck For President and discussed the voting process.  We then had an election for what reward our class would be working toward.  Show and Tell won :)

Please be sure to look through your child's folder each Friday when we send home papers from that week.  Today their first spelling test and math test are in their folder.  This year we will be working out of workbooks a lot so there may not be as many papers as in years past.
I will be sending home Powerschool passwords next week.  We had some issues with many of the passwords and I just received them all today so we are good to go.
Have a great weekend.
