Weekly News 9/18/11

Thank you for your cooperation this past week with me being out for district meetings Monday and Wednesday. Although I don't like being out, especially at the beginning of the year, I got an excellent report from the substitute.
This past week your children continued to learn new letters with the letters m & n. We learned their sounds and the proper way to write the letters. We will continue this method for all the lowercase letters which will help us to build and read words. We also began to write in our word journals. In these journals we choose a letter to focus on and brainstorm words that begin with that letter and then we choose three to add to our journals and illustrate the words.
We also continued to learn our color words and added a page to our book we are creating. This will continue through October.
In science we began our unit on the five senses by taking a nature, listening, walk. We discussed all that we heard and what we would do without the ability to hear.
In Math we are continuing to work on number sense, which includes counting by 1's, five's and ten's. We also are working on printing our numbers and representing them.
Thursday we celebrated Constitution Day by learning what the Constitution was, listening to a song that described it, and creating our own classroom constitution.

This week we will be focusing on several new skills and learning the new words green and like. We also will be introducing patterns in math and continuing the five senses. Our weekly letters are the letters, 'a' and 'c'.
On Friday we will be having Apple Day. We will be going to different stations to learn certain skills in a fun way.

I will be beginning volunteers this week, the calendar will be sent home tomorrow for this. If you are unable to volunteer on the day I assign you, you may switch with another parent on your own or let me know and I will take care of it. Have a great week.
